SP25 (W8): Upcoming Farm Events
Dear Farm Community -
It’s finally happening! Strawberries are here! It was a bit of an uphill slog to get to the point of harvesting this year. Unfortunately a good number of our strawberry plants failed as they overwintered (as is the case with a lot of Georgia farmers this year), but we’re pleased that our efforts and attention caring for the survivors has finally rewarded us with enough of a strawberry crop to offer up to our CSA members and farmers market customers! We’ve been nibbling them along the way and they’re yummy as can be!
Our hard work and patience has also paid off in the world of flowers, as our PEONIES are blooming for the first time! You may or may not be in the know about peonies and why they’re so coveted, celebrated, and adored... Peonies are a difficult flower to grow and take a long time to get established - flowering only after they have 2-5 years of growth under their belts (err…. roots?) Since it’s their first year harvesting, we’re also leaving a good number of blooms on the plant. When too many blooms are cut the first year it can divert energy away from root development and foliage growth, ultimately hindering its full potential. Why they’re so celebrated? You only have to take a look at them to understand - they’re just gorgeous. We were happy to include some in our CSA bouquets last week - along with the gorgeous agrostemma we’ve been harvesting and a few more spring beauties. Take a look at how happy they make Farmer Bekah and Farmer Averi :)
Perhaps the BIGGEST news on the farm though is the awesome incredible fun and fantastic events we’re planning for May!!!! We have a *chefs kiss* perfect weekend planned for you, so mark your calendars and get your tickets before they’re gone! And get this - 100% of proceeds go towards our Share the Harvest Fund, our in-house initiative to reduce food insecurity in the Athens area.

Your CSA’s this week obviously include strawberries!!! Our recipes page has an abundance of strawberry recipes to spark your imagination, so I encourage you to explore all of those yummy possibilities. A few standout favorites include…. roasted strawberries (which make an ice cream topping from the gods), vegan strawberry cheesecake dip (serve with fruit, cookies, or use it to top muffins and breads), or this strawberry kale salad which makes use of the kale in your share! We hope you enjoy this sweet springtime treat however you eat it!
