SP25 (W7): Flowers are ON
Dear Farm Community -
Despite a chilly end to the week, our cool-weather flowers are giving us their final hurrah as the warm weather rolls through. The ranunculus tunnels are in the process of being flipped into tomato houses, and we're still harvesting the last few anemones and poppies trickling in as we work our way down the daunting flip list—aka the “out with the old, in with the new” list aka our to-do list of specific beds and houses that need to be turned over. That means clearing out spent crops, tossing them in the compost pile, and doing all necessary bed turnover work: broadforking, amending soil, tilling, laying irrigation, and transplanting to get beds back into production. Last week’s rain made flipping our down-field ranunculus house especially tricky—our mini truck got briefly stuck in the muck! Luckily, we get by with a little help from our friends (and tractor) and were able to free it. This week, we’ll be pulling old ranunculus plants from the second high tunnel and planting more tomatoes (and their companion plants) into both houses. Check out a little of the excitement below:
While these transitions give us lots to look forward to in the future, there is also so much happening now! As our overwinter flowers like ranunculus, poppies, and anemones slow to a halt, our late spring/summer flowers are bursting on the scene! Suddenly we’ve got tons of flower varieties to harvest - we’re seeing agrostemma, ammobium, foxglove, campanula, honeywort, orlaya, snapdragons, delphinium, dianthus, bachelor buttons, larkspur, and more finally blooming for harvest! (It’s kind of a great time to join our flower CSA….)
We’re also harvesting a newly ready veggie this week—baby kale! And you’ll have the option to bring some home in your CSA! Unlike its mature adult-leaf counterparts, our baby kale comes from a special mix of varieties selected specifically for their tender, delicious young leaves. The flavor is phenomenal, and the greens are super versatile—perfect for salads, more salads, stir fries (you can always add greens at the end!), even more salads, or any dish that calls for a hearty green, like kale and white bean soup! While not our biggest seller at market (yet!), we keep growing it and spreading the good word because honestly, we’re obsessed—and we think it’s only a matter of time before everyone else catches on We know you’ll love it!!
Take it from Farmer Isaac, #1 fan: “Baby kale is gorgeously colorful, very mild and tender, and gives an amazing variety of texture to your salad! Plus, what’s cuter than a tiny dino kale leaf????”
“I’m baby”
We’re excited to keep uncovering all the abundance this year’s seasons have in store and to share the harvest with you each week. Your support makes this farm possible—truly. If you’re not yet a part of our CSA but want to be, we’d love to have you - our door is always open ;) Thanks a million for being part of it all and for showing up to celebrate the work, the food, and the beauty with us.
