SP25 (W9): Sugar Snaps & Chocolate Cakes

Dear Farm Community -

It’s been a fun and busy stretch on the farm lately, and we’re so stoked about everything that’s coming into season! Here’s a quick and dirty update with lots of little tidbits: what’s new, what’s exciting, what’s important, and a few things that aren’t exactly important... but are definitely too silly not to share.

  • SUGAR SNAP PEAS ARE HERE! They’ve finally grown large enough for us to harvest and they are soooooooo crisp and sweet. Everybody gets them in their CSA shares this week! Read on for some sugar snap inspo later in the newsletter….

  • The littlest baby green tomatoes have begun to form on our first succession of tomato plants! Not long now till we’re biting into those big red juicy ‘maters 🍅 Get your Duke’s Mayo ready!

  • Last week, our farmers went all out with three days of lunchtime chocolate cakes — two days of cake for Farmer Jackie’s birthday and one “just because” cake from Farmer Bekah. We are absolute chocolate cake fiends. Too silly and sweet not to mention.

  • Some other summer delights have been planted ~ we got cucumbers and melons in the ground and growing last week!

  • The next round of carrots is just a few weeks away! To get these sweet little guys to harvest, we spent hours pulling thousands of henbit flowers from the beds. A labor of love — and soon, they’ll be on your dinner plate! Something to look forward to ;)

  • The absolute tidal wave of flowers blooming has been keeping us hustling on market prep Fridays! This past Friday there were soooo many flowers that we were busy bunching about 3 hours past our usual stop time 😱 but with all that leftover chocolate cake and the “2000’s Crunk Hits” playlist on Spotify, we kept the energy good right till the end ~ and happy to have sent all those blooms out into the world!

  • In case you missed it…. We’re hosting two special events at the farm in May! Join us for a Farm Dinner on 5/17 featuring a multi-course ✨culinary experience✨ by local chef Ryanne Rothenberg, then come back for Farm Yoga the next morning — stretching, breathing, and soaking up the fresh air — with Phelan LaVelle of Grateful Head Yoga! All are welcome ~ we accommodate all dietary needs, and this yoga event is for every body and ability (you can even just come for the good vibes!). All proceeds from both events go towards our Share the Harvest Fund addressing food insecurity in the Athens area.

As promised, y’all get the sweetest sugar snaps around this week! If you’re like me, that pint may not even make it home (or even back to the car) ~ they’re just so dang snackable. But if you have award-winning self control and a desire to incorporate them into your recipes for the week, check out this recipe for Quinoa Salad with Sugar Snap Peas, Scallions, and Mint that also uses the scallions in your share ~ great for a light dinner, hearty side dish or healthy lunch! If you’re looking for something a lil more rich, how about Scorched Sugar Snap Peas with Burrata or a Sesame Snap Pea Salad? If you’re a grillmaster like Farmer Anna, this recipe for Grilled Sugar Snap Peas with Smoked Paprika Aioli is calling your name.

For inspo with any of the other items in your share (looking at you, turnips!), head to our recipes page ;)
