F25 (W10): A Little Taste of Winter Farming

Dear Farm Community -

Dang y’all, we really got our first taste of winter last week with those chilly temps and cold, rainy days… and we’re barely a month into fall 😱 While we’ve still dodged the frost and this week is looking quite a bit warmer and sunnier, there’s no denying the cold is on its way. We’ve begun our cold-weather preparations, putting plastic over the open entryways of our greenhouses. With these covered, we can button the houses up tight in the afternoons, capturing the daytime warmth to keep our plants cozy through chilly evenings. Some of our more cold-sensitive plantings are also being donned in row cover, pulling off the same magic trick on a smaller scale. We’re glad every day wasn’t as soggy as last Monday and Tuesday ~ but they sure got our butts in gear ;)

Last Tuesday morning we had the distinct pleasure of attending Career Day on Wheels at Cleveland Road Elementary School in Athens! Unfortunately, we couldn’t bring our tractor (it might have taken us two hours to get there), but we brought our big delivery van and chatted with nearly 100 2nd and 3rd graders, sharing what it’s like to be a farmer. Lots of kids excitedly told us that their families have gardens at home, growing watermelons, collards, apples, and more! It was admittedly hard to compete with the sirens on the firetruck and the giant claw filled with mulch on the landscaping truck (who can blame them), but it was so sweet to chat with the kiddos and tell them that YES! Farming IS a real job that still exists! To any Cleveland Road Elementary School readers out there… thank you! We had a great time!!

Back at the farm in the sunshiney half of the week, the veggie and flower crews teamed up for a little handoff in Greenhouse 5… peppers came out, and the house was flipped to make way for our first succession of ranunculus! We got the entire greenhouse cleared and prepped, and planting kicks off this week 🌱

Did anybody in Atlanta catch our cameo in a recent commercial featuring Mayor Andre Dickens talking about the best things to do in the city?? One of our farmer’s parents spotted us on TV! The Andre Dickens team captured some B-roll of our booth at the Freedom Farmers Market, and it made the final cut. We’re stoked to represent Atlanta’s local agriculture scene…. even if it’s just for a few seconds of fame ;) If anyone’s seen the full video, send it our way!

CSA Members - Don’t forget! Our End-of-the-Year Potluck will be THIS Saturday, November 8th, from 4:00–7:00 PM right here on the farm 🍂✨ Come celebrate the abundant year with us (and the weeks still yet to come), connect with other members of our farm community, and enjoy the land that grows your food. Bring a dish to share if you can ~ we’ll be cooking up some too! Beverages will be provided, and of course no fall gathering would be complete without a bonfire and s’mores, on the house 🔥 You should have received a paper invite a few weeks ago in your CSA, but your confirmation emails this week will also have the deets. Please respond to this email or diamondhillfarmcsa@gmail.com to RSVP. We can’t wait to celebrate together and truly hope you’ll make it out!

Your CSA shares this week contain frisée (frizz-ayyyyy) !! This curly, slightly bitter green adds texture and brightness to fall salads. It’s part of the chicory family, a cousin to escarole and radicchio, and holds up beautifully decorated in rich dressings or warm toppings like bacon, eggs, or roasted veggies. We love it for its delicate frilly leaves and its ability to bring a little sophistication and crunch to the table. You’ll want to cut off the dark green bits and utilize mostly the white and light green parts of the head.

How to eat it? You can travel to France without leaving the kitchen when you make this Salade Lyonnaise - frisée with bacon, croutons, and a poached egg (or you can fry it, we won’t tell anybody 🤫)…. If you’re looking for something warmer on these chilly evenings, pick up some mushrooms and cook up this Warm Frisée and Mushroom Salad that’s dressed with dijon for incredible flavor. If you want a fishier angle, try this recipe for Sautéed Frisée with Anchovies, Buttery Breadcrumbs, and Tahini. If these aren’t doin’ it for you, you can always just toss it in your usual salad alongside your lettuce to add a crunchy complex dimension to your dish🥬
