F25 (W9): The Fall Puzzle
Dear Farm Community -
We’ve been in puzzle mode lately, fitting together all the pieces of our fall aspirations ~ from quick turnover plantings of greens and radishes, to overwinter plantings and next spring’s flower dreams. It’s always a challenge to orchestrate available space with the seedlings that are ready to get planted out (especially when and where we want them to go!) We’re definitely doing the shuffle this year as veggie crew and flower crew negotiate for prime real estate, we call some last-minute audibles on long-term crop locations, and we make some tough decisions about what to pull out a little early (sorry, eggplant!) in favor of planting for the season ahead.
Meanwhile, our strawberry plugs arrived and are in the ground!! While strawberry plugs can look a little rough upon arrival, don’t be fooled. Over the winter they’ll root in and transform into a lush, green carpet of berry-laden plants by spring 🍓 We plant strawberries every fall for the biggest, sweetest berries come springtime, treating them as annuals to keep our harvests top quality.
Turnips and beets are looking big and beautiful, and baby celery was planted out last week ~ just in time to grow up for all y’all’s Thanksgiving feasts. We also planted our spring delphinium, tucking those little starts in for a long winter’s rest before their BIG spring blooms. So much motion in the ocean (dirt) happening right now!
Farmer Antho tackled a worthwhile project last week, giving our walk-behind tiller some much-needed TLC by replacing its worn-down tines with fresh new ones. It’s amazing how nubby the old choppers had gotten (no one can quite remember when they were last swapped out…) so this is a serious glow-up for that little machine. The walk-behind tiller really pulls its weight around here, and the upgrade will go a long way toward better shaping planting beds, breaking up deeper hardpan soil for improved drainage, incorporating amendments, and keeping us nimble with plantings in the tunnels. Big thanks Antho!!

For CSA Members!
Don’t forget! Our End-of-the-Year Potluck will be on Saturday, November 8th, from 4:00–7:00 PM right here on the farm 🍂✨ Come celebrate the abundant year with us (and the weeks still yet to come), connect with other members of our farm community, and enjoy the land that grows your food. Bring a dish to share if you can ~ we’ll be cooking up some too! Beverages will be provided, and of course no fall gathering would be complete without a bonfire and s’mores, on the house 🔥 You should have received a paper invite a few weeks ago in your CSA, but your confirmation emails this week will also have the deets. We can’t wait to celebrate together and truly hope you’ll make it out!
Your CSA shares this week contain the option for either broccoli or cauliflower! Those of you opting for cauliflower can cook up some pasta and try out this decadent vegan Cauliflower Alfredo Dressing from Everyday Alchemy. Go a step beyond and use it to make the whole Cauliflower Alfredo Pasta dish ~ you’ll use those sweet peppers in your share too! For the broccoli-heads in the room, this Broccoli Spoon Salad from Bon Appetit recently rocked my world, or you could try out this equally delicious and very cozy Broccoli Cheddar Soup (vegan version available here). Enjoy your shares this week :)
Stay Dry out There!
