W26 (WK3): Actually, Winter is Here.
Dear Farm Community -
Okay okay okay we take back everything we said last week about winter not coming this year. It’s here and we are saying “uncle!” BRRRR!! We had a chilly week & weekend, and much of our time was spent prepping for lows in the low 20’s. Every time it dips this low we’re reminded of how bizarre it looks to have the farm buttoned up so tight. Every high tunnel closed with each bed under row cover inside, every outdoor crop with hopes of survival covered with sheets of white frost cloth. If you walked on the farm during an afternoon like this, there’s not a plant in sight. We even took precautions to protect our germinating trays of tomato seeds.
Good luck, babies!
Our crate tulips transformed into two tents for some very tall campers. Old frost cloth draped over the irrigation system and scraps of greenhouse plastic wrapped around the crates will keep them from frost damage. No such thing as waste, just untapped resources! Our thrifty solution is keeping these tulips warm enough, but I still wouldn’t trade places with them!
Tuber Anatomy 101
Besides prepping for the cold, we’ve been busy prepping for more spring produce! Beds are being shaped, irrigation laid out, and field plans reviewed. Lots going in the ground and lots going to our markets! We’ve been very excited about our Brussel sprouts, a crop that we grow every year that typically doesn’t produce huge harvests. It’s still modest in yield this year, but more substantial than any of our other recent attempts! Our Atlanta community members can keep their eyes peeled for these at market!
We’ve also got some good news for our florist friends 🌸 Our 2026 wholesale buying guide and registered buyer application are officially LIVE on our website! We recommend applying early ~ once March hits, we’ll be up to our eyeballs in harvesting blooms. If you’re a florist, we’d love to add you to our wholesale email list and connect you with some of the most beautiful flowers around. To start dreaming up your year ahead, take a look at our 2025 and 2024 bloom calendars for a glimpse of what we grow and offer.
We’d love to be your flower farm!
Your CSA shares this week contain CELERY!!!! Calm down calm down! Hold your applause!
Yes, we know…. celery may not get the same hype as some of our MVP’s (most valuable produce), but then again maybe you haven’t had farm fresh celery before! Rarely the lead, celery shines in its irreplaceable supporting role, quietly taking a dish further than it could go on its own. Take for instance, Molly Baz’s K-bas and Cabbage Soup. Celery doesn’t make the marquee, but as part of the aromatic base it releases a subtle, earthy, savory flavor that builds depth and balances the richer tastes of sausage and cabbage. It’s part of a classic aromatic trio (celery, garlic, and onion) used in soups and stews because it creates a more layered, rounded flavor overall. You can see it shining in the same way in this classic chicken soup recipe, this labor-intensive-but-absolutelty-worth-it greek Avgolemono Soup, and Marcella Hazan’s famous Bolognese sauce recipe. Vegetarians out there will be happy to taste its subtle but powerful contribution in this Tuscan Farro Soup!
You may be seeing a theme….. we’re just hoping you cook up something cozy for this cold weather ;)
