Dear Farm Community,
With the weather just absolutely divine, itβs been a perfect time to get some heavy lifting done on this dirt we call ours. We had a full-on greenhouse makeover at our Morton Rd property last week π This makeover wasn't exactly high fashion glamorous, though. Over the years the soil had gotten pretty flat as the aisles we walk in slowly ate up the soil that we prefer lofted atop the beds. So to give it a good reset, we spent many hours digging out aisles, broadforking, amending soil, tilling, and planting. We made a lot of jokes about being "in the trenches" and how this is pretty much the epitome of toiling. But honestly, low-key, we all loved getting to dig and dig and dig and see the fruits of our labor with a totally transformed greenhouse. Reminds us of an instagram video we saw recentlyβ¦ By Wednesday the beds were looking SO beautiful, and we had planted the whole house out with kale and chard. Chefs Kiss! If you listened closely to the wind, you could almost hear Ty Pennington shouting "MOVE THAT BUS!!!" in the distance. (That joke is for fans of the early 2000s reality TV masterpiece Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Hope you enjoy.)
We had some precious little visitors on the farm last week too ~ a group of students from Athens Montessori had a field trip out to the farm to see our farmers in action and learn all about where their local food comes from! Dozens of little feet pitter pattered around the fields as we showed them what we do out here every day. Who knows, maybe some future farmers in the group!! Our super-special, Diamond Hill Farm farmer-made coloring page was a hit, too! If you'd like to print one out for a kiddo in your life (or if you're an adult who loves to color and learn about our farm because we fully support that), head to the link below the pics and print out your very own! :-)
We also had a different kind of visitor recently... a rather LARGE snapping turtle who unexpectedly decided to come check out what the heck those weird humans are always doinβ in that big old field. Luckily, we had some brave farmers willing to lend a hand and help this prehistoric gentleman find his way back to the swamp. Thanks for stopping by, buddy!
That's the farm report for this week, folks! Lots of hard work, a little community fun, a little wildlife excitement, and plenty of good things growing :-)
All members this week will be receiving a heaping portion of greens! Collards, lettuce, kale, and bok choy galore! After such a long farm update weβll keep it quick in the recipe zone, leaning heavy into some delicious NYT recipes (BTW, our links will give you access even if you donβt have a subscription!)
β Collards? Something meaty & delicious (half the recipe or use both collards and kale for the full recipe), or maybe just something super simple and veg.
β Kale? A cozy turkey soup is calling for you. I can hear it. Vegetarians head here for a meat free version!
β Bok Choy? Soup again. Or fire up the oven and get the house cozy and warm with a vegetarian sheet pan dinner ;-)
And donβt forget, you can always find a little inspiration on our recipe page!
So Grateful,
Diamond Hill Farmers
