SP26 (WK5): Maters, Cukes, & OkrA Planted

Dear Farm Community -

We’ve been deep in the springtime hustle of transplanting till we drop! Last week was huge for getting plant babies our of the seedhouse and into fields and high tunnels. We’ve planted out so many summer favorites - cucumbers, tomatoes, and okra are out in the field on their journey to harvest, and we’ve seeded plenty of beds of green beans, yellow beans, purple beans, and the very fun dragons tongue bean ;)

We are sooooooooooo close to a magically abundant strawberry season, too. After a few years of strawberry mishaps outside of our control, this year seems to be our big comeback. Seeing all these berries on the cusp of ripening is exciting beyond description. I mean look at this field! Berry plants as far as the eye can see! We’re getting very close - stay tuned for the berry avalanche, and hop on board our CSA now for priority berries as soon as they ripen up.

Despite the late freeze, we’ve also still got plenty of blossoms on our blueberry bushes and the katie-bees are hard at work pollinating. The rest of our orchard is still in toddler stages (planted in 2024, it’s in the terrible two’s!), but our blackberry canes are showing some flowers and we’re hoping for a small harvest from them this year, too.

In other news, if you happen to be a chronically-online-local-news-fanatic, you may have seen an old photo of our booth and Flower Manager Alex in a recent article from the Red and Black discussing the importance of the Athens Farmers Market! We always love seeing the farm and local agriculture get a little spotlight in the news, and it’s true, farmers markets are important!

That being said, FARMERS MARKET SEASON is in full swing, and we’d love to give you an update on where to find us this year since there have been a few changes in our market schedule!

Shout it far and wide! Tell your friends and fam! Come visit us at the market closest you and get on this local delight :~)

CSA shares this week contain some fresh spring FENNEL! Lucky you! These beautiful bulbs with magnificent fronds are packed with flavor and so versatile in the kitchen. This quick-to-assemble shaved fennel salad pairs the licorice-y flavor of the fennel with salty parmesan cheese and a lemony dressing. If you want to keep it simple with a little side dish, check out this recipe for roasted fennel with garlic - about as basic as you can get but it still packs some incredible flavor. If you want to GO BIG on a special recipe, consider Alison Roman’s Lemon Chicken Soup with Fennel and Dill! Hopefully these recipes get you dreaming of all the possibilities hiding among that plumage 🦚
