SM25 (W2): Farmers Wear Many Hats

Dear Farm Community -

Did you know that our farmers are much more than “just” farmers? Running a farm requires every person to wear a dozen hats. Farmer Alex said it best in her Know Your Farmer interview this past winter ~

“I love how you can bring any of your passions or skills to a farm - are you an artist? an engineer? a mechanic? an athlete? an accountant? a scientist? If you are, you might be a farmer. If you're not, work on a farm and you could be. It's such a multifaceted job that can push you to grow in any direction.”

Our farm crew is all of the above, and then some. We’ve recently been reminded of this breadth of skill as Farmer Antho and Farmer Isaac put on their builder hats to convert part of our pack shed into a new cool-room - expanding our temperature controlled storage and our ability to grow & store more potatoes, tomatoes, onions, and other cool-but-not-cold storage crops. They’ll be the first to say it’s not perfect—but hey, it’s pretty dang good! And the real win? They jumped in, tried something new, and we’re ending up with something awesome that’s helping us raise the bar on what we can do and offer our community. Take a look at a little of the progress:

They’re wrapping up this project just in time, too, because potatoes are HERE! We’re digging them out of the ground by the crateful and they’re yummy, tender and nutritious as can be. Right now we’re digging up our Red Norland potatoes, but we’ll have lots more varieties as the season progresses - German Butterball, Carla Rosa, Austrian Crescent, and more. Check out these Red Norland beauties!

Y’all are getting these gorgeous fresh potatoes in your shares this week!!! I bet you’re already dreaming up what recipes will make your family & dinner guests say “…and what excellent boiled potatoes! Many years since I've had such an exemplary vegetable….” Well - whether you boil em, mash em, or stick em in a stew, they’re gonna be a perfect addition to your dinner plate. If those recipes are a little too hot for your liking as these days heat up, try a more summery recipe like this incredibly yummy potato salad (tried and true), fire up the grill, or have a tapas night al fresco with some Spanish patatas braves!

Happy eating!
